YMCA Earth Service Corps

The YMCA Earth Service Corps (YESC) empowers young people to be effective, global citizens by providing opportunities for environmental education and action, leadership development and cultural competency. Founded in 1989 as a partnership between one high school and the Metrocenter YMCA*, a branch of the YMCA of Greater Seattle, YESC has grown over the last 20 years to become a core leadership program of the YMCA of the USA. In Seattle, YESC serves more than 1500 students annually through school-based environmental education and service learning clubs, regional events, and leadership retreats. Working with both high school and middle schools almost entirely in public schools, YESC removes the barriers to engaging in environmental education and service by bringing programming to students. New partnerships with the Matt Griffin YMCA in SeaTac have expanded programs into high-needs areas such as the Highline and Tukwila school districts. As a result of this inclusive approach, in the 2010-2011 academic year YESC students put in more than 11,000 hours of service in schools, parks, and trails throughout Washington. At the core of YESC is the belief that students, when empowered to take leadership of their own clubs, will put great ideas into action. Whether in clubs, at regional service projects, or at our annual service project, students take a leadership role in designing and running all activities.

Member Duties : At YESC, you will be based out of one of three branches – the Metrocenter YMCA in Seattle, the Matt Griffin YMCA in SeaTac, or the Northshore YMCA– where you will work with 6 school-based environmental leadership clubs. As an advisor to clubs, you will work with student leaders and teacher advisors to implement projects within the school, ranging from awareness campaigns to school-wide composting initiatives. You will be an instrumental part of planning regional events such as monthly service projects, leadership retreats, and our annual Environmental Symposium, which draws together teens and adults for a day of learning and fun. With the guidance of YESC staff, you will work to grow community partnerships with environmental and youth development organizations based in the greater Seattle area. You will also choose one focus areas –education, recreation, arts, or cultural competency– and develop curriculum pieces or create opportunities for youth.
