Clackamas Volunteers in Medicine Outreach and Planning VISTA

The Clackamas Volunteers in Medicine Founders Clinic is the only free clinic in Clackamas County. As a ‘safety net’ clinic, CVIM sees all residents who do not have health insurance, are under-insured and who are excluded from the Affordable Care Act for a variety of reasons. All care is provided at no cost to the patients, by over 200 medical, allied health and administrative volunteers. Increasingly, the population seen at CVIM is comprised of rural, Hispanic/Latino individuals who have been marginalized from the system and who suffer from undetected, long-neglected chronic health conditions that impact their ability to care for themselves, their families, and contribute to society. In the short term, this means they inappropriately use the emergency department as their primary care home. In the long run, it means their chances of preventing or catching a major health issue before it becomes life threatening is severely affected. The VISTA will specifically increase Clackamas Volunteers in Medicine’s capacity to serve patients from the Latino/Hispanic communities with cultural sensitivity, as well as those living in outlying rural areas of the county by developing and implementing a comprehensive ‘mobile’ outreach program that reaches those most isolated and marginalized by the health care system and who suffer from undetected and long-neglected chronic health conditions. This position is located in Oregon City, just a few miles from Portland, which boasts a wide variety of activities, cultures, and scenic recreational opportunities. With the innovative public health work happening in Oregon, Oregon City is a wonderful place to explore a future in public health.
