Washington Reading Corps - Satus Elementary
 
 
 
Do you have a passion for serving others and making a difference in the community, and want to learn skills you can use in a professional career? The Washington Reading Corps is a national service program that is actively engaged in improving literacy in communities, local schools and learning centers throughout the state. In collaboration with the state’s Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction, projects in this program focus on: tutoring struggling readers in Kindergarten through fourth grade, and preparing young children for successful entry into Kindergarten and literacy achievement in Early Learning Centers. • The positions are considered full time positions (average of 40 hours per week) running for 10.5 months • Member stipend $1,202.86 per month (pre-tax) • Education award is $5815.00 dependent upon member’s successful term completion and accumulation of at least 1700 service hours. • The opportunity to put qualified federal loans in forbearance while they serve • Food and Childcare assistance if qualified The Washington Reading Corps is ideal for people who are taking a year off from/before college, making a career change, or interested in tutoring kids and giving back. Member Duties : WRC members will engage in direct-service Early Learning/K-4 literacy tutoring (one-on-one or in small groups) AND program development in an elementary school, early learning or community-based setting. Members will engage in any or all of the following activities and projects to strengthen the WRC program: support recruitment of community volunteer tutor programs before and after school, enhance or create community volunteer recruitment systems, promote and encourage peer and cross-age tutoring opportunities, work with English Language Learners and coordinate activities to increase English proficiency, family and community involvement events and projects, develop or expand existing volunteer recognition program, support of WRC beneficiaries during classroom reading instruction, and build community-based literacy resources that can be shared within and between schools.
