City of Olympia, Habitat Coordinator

City of Olympia Water Resources (Storm and Surface Water Utility) protects and enhances water quality and aquatic habitat citywide. In response to citizen requests in 2015, staff developed a habitat stewardship strategy to improve aquatic habitat quality, quantity, and connectivity citywide. Strategy implementation entails managing invasive species, planting native species, improving water quality, and restoring natural processes in aquatic and associated areas. Staff assess existing environmental conditions, develop restoration plans, recruit volunteers, and coordinate work efforts for public properties like parks and stormwater management sites. In an effort to achieve broad, landscape-scale impacts, the strategy also calls for stewardship efforts on privately owned properties. The City’s residential habitat stewardship program (OlyWild) provides outreach, education, technical assistance, and incentives to homeowners to enhance habitat and environmental quality on their property. The Member will join the Water Resources team of inspired, creative and dedicated staff and volunteers contributing to habitat enhancement and restoration and stormwater pollution prevention programs on both private and public properties. They will gain valuable job skills and diverse experiences and take part in a group culture emphasizing respect, collaboration, innovation, and excellence. This position is contingent on funding. In addition to applying through the AmeriCorps website, please send a resume and cover letter detailing your qualifications and interest in the position to Susan McCleary, smccleary@ci.olympia.wa.us.
