City of Olympia, Stormwater Outreach Coordinator

The City of Olympia Storm and Surface Water Utility is committed to protecting the health of local streams, lakes, wetlands, and drinking water. We are involved in many types of public education and outreach, including outreach to reduce polluted stormwater runoff. Stormwater runoff is the single highest contributor to pollution in Puget Sound. As rain washes over hard surfaces it picks up dirt, pet waste, liter, oil, chemicals and other pollutants and dumps them into local waterways, degrading aquatic habitat and water quality. Neighborhood stormwater facilities such as stormwater ponds slow stormwater and remove pollutants. Both functions are critical to reduce the risk of flooding and protect water quality. So naturally making sure our community’s stormwater management systems are functioning well is a high priority for the Utility. The AmeriCorps member will provide support for stormwater public involvement and education programs with a primary focus on private stormwater systems. While gaining valuable professional skills and experience, the Member will have opportunities to collaborate and network with peers and regional partners to improve water quality. The Member will join the Environmental Services Team of inspired, creative and dedicated staff and volunteers contributing to habitat enhancement and restoration and stormwater pollution prevention programs. This position is contingent on funding. In addition to applying through the AmeriCorps website, please send a resume and cover letter detailing your qualifications and interest in the position to Susan McCleary, smccleary@ci.olympia.wa.us.
