Literacy Volunteer Coordinator VISTA - Alisal Support Team
 
 
 
The City of Salinas’ mission is to create a safe, healthy, prosperous, vibrant, and equitable community through targeted revitalization, sustainable policies, and well-designed land uses that facilitate a high quality of life and encourages community growth and partnerships. The Alisal is located on the Salinas’ East side and is home to a majority-minority population that is 94 percent Hispanic or Latino, with 33 percent of its residents living in poverty, compared to 21 percent of Salinas residents overall. The Alisal Plan is a community driven planning process that will communicate the collective vision of the residents and strategies for on-going collaboration and partnership between the City and community in addressing issues and opportunities specific to the Alisal. The Alisal Plan Support Team, comprised of five VISTA members, will work together on multifaceted strategies to alleviate poverty in the Alisal neighborhood by focusing on Economic Opportunity, Housing, Education and Literacy, and Healthy Futures.

Member Duties : The VISTA will build capacity of the City of Salinas’s early literacy and overall volunteer program by developing a sustainable volunteer recruitment and management system for its mentoring program. Duties may include, but are not limited to developing an improvement plan for our current volunteer program, develop a volunteer managing, tracking and matching system, create volunteer job descriptions, qualifications, activities, benefits, training plans, and set-up and implement an outreach and recruitment system. Continue to build strong relationships with local high schools to facilitate volunteer opportunities for students.
