Healthy Futures VISTA - Alisal Support Team
 
 
 
The City of Salinas’ mission is to create a safe, healthy, prosperous, vibrant, and equitable community through targeted revitalization, sustainable policies, and well-designed land uses that facilitate a high quality of life and encourages community growth and partnerships. The Alisal is located on the Salinas’ East side and is home to a majority-minority population that is 94 percent Hispanic or Latino, with 33 percent of its residents living in poverty, compared to 21 percent of Salinas residents overall. The Alisal Plan is a community driven planning process that will communicate the collective vision of the residents and strategies for on-going collaboration and partnership between the City and community in addressing issues and opportunities specific to the Alisal. The Alisal Plan Support Team, comprised of five VISTA members, will work together on multifaceted strategies to alleviate poverty in the Alisal neighborhood by focusing on Economic Opportunity, Education, and Healthy Futures.

Member Duties : The Healthy Futures VISTA will connect residents with appropriate healthcare and nutrition resources by developing a speaking curriculum for libraries and community centers. This VISTA will work with partners such as the Monterey County Health Department and healthcare clinics to invite health professionals to speak on a range of services targeted for the Alisal residents and develop marketing material for the “Healthy Family” programming series. In addition this VISTA will also work on establishing systems to turn the produce that surrounds Salinas into an affordable source of healthy food and entrepreneurial opportunity.
