BMVP - Community Mental Health – Increase Access to Service

The Red Lodge Area Community Foundation connects people and builds community by catalyzing change and sharing resources to build a strong, vibrant, resilient, inclusive community. According to Montana Primary Care Workforce Newsletter, 56 of 56 counties in Montana have a Mental Health Professional Shortage Area Designation. Suicide is the 8th leading cause of death in Montana as of 2015, according to American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. The results of the 2016 Beartooth Billings Clinic Community health needs assessment revealed that Carbon County residents rank alcohol and drug abuse (22%) and mental health (11%) as the first and second most pressing health issue. Poverty exacerbates these health concerns. Currently, 11.7% of Carbon County residents live below the poverty level. Based on local and state, rural Montana’s mental health crisis consistently ranks as a critical health issue in communities. The lack of accessibility, shortage of providers and stigmatization of mental illness creates an environment which disables individuals even further. Awareness, education, and access to mental health care are the initial steps to improving health conditions of those experiencing poverty. People with access to adequate support to address mental health issues are able to acquire and maintain employment, engage in education services, and lead productive lives. Ongoing mental health issues may lead to substance abuse, legal expenses, and increased sick days/hospitalization resulting in financial barriers. This project will alleviate poverty through awareness and education by providing information on how to access mental health care.

Member Duties : Help the Red Lodge Community support people with mental health issues through education, awareness and connection to services. The overall goal of this project is to support, educate, and connect those suffering from mental health obstacles to available services. By educating local providers, government, and law enforcement, programming can be developed to ensure adequate training for first responders, proper treatment by providers, and create a supportive community. People with mental health issues with access to information will be able to engage in services, acquire and maintain employment, engage in higher learning and education opportunities, reduce health care costs and will help create the conditions necessary for them to rise out of poverty. The VISTA will be successful by engaging and recruiting eight community volunteers to a steering committee, developing funds of $9,000, and creating a community engagement plan to educate and promote mental health and services awareness.
