BMVP - Increasing Early Childhood Education!
The Red Lodge Area Community Foundation connects people and builds community by catalyzing change and sharing resources to build a strong, vibrant, resilient, inclusive community. According to 2015 Kids Count Data there were approximately 430 children under the age of five in Carbon County yet there are only around 35 licensed or registered childcare slots. Of the estimated 430 kids, 103 of them are living in poverty, according to the 2015 census data. This indicates a large need for increased early childhood services all throughout Carbon County, specifically affordable childcare, infant care, quality childcare program, and parent and caregiver training. Disparities in children’s cognitive, social, emotional and behavioral growth can start as early as 24 months. But children from low income families who are enrolled in high-quality early education programs are 30% more likely to graduate high school and twice as likely to attend college. Further, adults who participated in high-quality early childhood education programs were more likely to be employed and had 36% higher median annual earnings, effectively impacting poverty levels. Working with the Early Childhood Fund will increase the child care scholarship opportunities for low income families, giving children access to quality care and early learning. This increases the chances for future success and career opportunities for the child, and also the ability for parents to work or continue their education, which will help break the cycle of poverty.
