*BMVP - Expand Food Security with Family Service, Inc.

Family Service Inc., prevents hunger and homelessness and helps alleviate poverty. Nearly 35 percent of low income citizens in Yellowstone County have run out of food during the year, while less than eight percent of middle / high income citizens report food insecurity. Many areas in Billings are both home to low income households and are considered food deserts. Those with adequate food security have the opportunity of saving $200-$600 dollars a month which can then be directed to gas for transportation to and from work, car repairs that have prevented going to work, rent and utility costs or even medical costs. Seniors who live in poverty have to choose between food and living expenses, so being able to receive nutritious food and extra commodity foods gives them a better chance to experience a higher quality of healthy living. This project will help alleviate poverty by increasing access to low cost, fresh produce and reducing transportation costs to obtain healthy food.
