BMVP - Increasing Healthcare Access for Native Americans

The Native American Development Corporation provides technical and financial resources necessary for economic, business, and community development in Native communities located in our four-state service area which includes Montana, Wyoming, North Dakota, and South Dakota. The City of Billings is adjacent to the Crow Nation and Northern Cheyenne Reservation and poverty rates are 34% and just under 50% respectively. Various risk factors such, as historical trauma, lack of language and culture knowledge, limited connections with elders, and unhealthy environments can contribute to mental health problems and other illnesses. In Billings, approximately 5,900 Urban Natives lost their access to consistent local care when the Indian Health Board of Billings closed their doors in May 2017. Many established agencies struggle in their attempts to retain and treat Native patients due to the importance of integrating traditional Native American healing practices into mainstream treatment interventions. Currently, Urban Natives have little or no access to culturally competent health care. With no local Urban Indian Clinic, Urban Natives eligible for health care through IHS have been forced to travel over an hour away to seek cultural healing practices from the Pryor Health Station and Crow/Northern Cheyenne Hospital in Crow Agency. Supporting the Billings Urban Indian Health and Wellness Center will foster community wellbeing and increase access to health care for low income Native Americans living on and off Reservations. Access to culturally competent health care that combines traditional healing practices with conventional medical practices will strengthen resiliency to health risks for Native Americans in Billings, MT. This project will alleviate poverty through appropriate healthcare access for all in impoverished communities, which will support Native American health resiliency.
