*BMVP-Addiction Services - Survivors of Domestic Violence

HAVEN is committed to reducing the incidence and minimizing the impact of domestic abuse on families and communities. Domestic violence is a significant public health problem in the United States. A study conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, estimates that one in three women and one in seven men will experience intimate partner violence, translating to 20,000 residents of Gallatin County. These survivors of intimate partner violence are at a significantly higher risk of sex trafficking and suffering from substance abuse than the general population. A study published by The National Child Traumatic Stress Network reports that up to 76 percent of substance abuse cases start after exposure to trauma. With this level of co-occurrence between substance abuse and having experienced trauma, it is not surprising that as many as 50 percent of female participants in substance abuse recovery programs report having been victims of intimate partner violence. Perpetrators of domestic violence often control financial means as a form of abuse, so the fear of being homeless and in poverty often keep victims in abusive situations. The intended result of this project is to increase domestic violence / abuse education by the development and strengthening of community partners working in the recovery field. This education will reach vulnerable populations, including survivors of intimate partner violence who suffer from substance abuse, increase HAVEN’s capacity to assist and support survivor clients through new outreach efforts and services, and increase the number of survivors served. This project will alleviate poverty through the expansion of crisis intervention services to assist survivors in moving toward a health standing that will support their journey out of poverty. People in recovery from addiction and domestic violence situations have better access to stable housing, healthcare, education, and employment opportunities.
