Disaster Preparedness VISTA

The Road Home is a private non-profit social service agency that assists individuals and families with children experiencing homelessness in Salt Lake County and along the Wasatch Front. The mission of The Road Home is to assist families and individuals in stepping out of homelessness and back into the community. Last year, The Road Home provided emergency shelter to 7,219 individuals (men, women and children) as well as served 1,301 individuals through our housing programs. The Road Home is the sponsor of the TRH Disaster Preparedness VISTA project which aims to ensure individuals and families experiencing homelessness have the tools to ensure a disaster does not sink them even deeper into poverty.

Member Duties : The primary goal will be to facilitate Disaster Preparedness to ensure that residents, and staff serving residents, at our Permanent Supportive Housing complex Palmer Court have increased knowledge, clear identified steps, and a plan to deal with a natural disaster and its aftermath. Individuals and families with children living at Palmer Court are formerly chronically homeless, which includes having a verifiable disabling condition. Preparation and planning is essential for this vulnerable population and could potentially prevent them from falling farther into poverty. We hope this project will reduce the impact of a natural disaster for residents through planning, as well as establish best practices and protocols for staff to better assist housing residents at Palmer Court and potentially other The Road Home housing locations.
