BMVP - Access to Healthcare / Crisis Intervention Services

The mission of ASPEN, the Abuse Support & Prevention Education Network, is to provide support services to victims/survivors of domestic and sexual violence and empower them to create safe and healthy lives for themselves and their families. ASPEN is also committed to breaking the cycle of violence by providing educational and awareness activities in the community. ASPEN provides shelter, advocacy, and other support services to many individuals and families who have never spoken to law enforcement. Domestic violence is one of the top causes of poverty among women; 40% of women applying for federal benefits list domestic violence as the primary reason they are in need of assistance. Research shows that a variety of factors contribute to the poverty of women and children who have also experienced domestic violence, including lack of access to: affordable housing; employment; health care; mental health counseling; and legal services. In the Livingston area, many are experiencing both poverty and domestic / sexual violence; nearly 13% and 11% of the citizens in Park and Sweet Grass Counties, respectively, have income levels below the poverty level. As ASPEN’s current volunteer force is very small (three people), increasing ASPEN’s volunteer base by five fully-trained people will: increase the organization’s ability to adequately manage the support phone line; strengthen access to healthcare / crisis intervention services such as safety planning, legal advocacy, healthcare / mental health counseling; and stabilize the lives of people who are both experiencing poverty and domestic and sexual violence crisis. People who have escaped domestic violence have improved access to healthcare, mental health counseling, and legal services. Household stability heightens opportunities to participate in higher education and to secure / maintain housing, adequate transportation and employment to achieve prosperity.

Member Duties : Join ASPEN in their efforts to increase access to services and help empower victims of domestic violence! The intended result of this project is to increase ASPEN’s capacity to assist and support survivors through new outreach and volunteer recruitment / retention efforts. This will, in turn, increase rural access to crisis intervention and health care services and promote stability and prosperity for people who have experienced poverty and domestic violence. The VISTA member will develop and implement a formal volunteer program, create and implement a plan for financial stability, and carry out marketing activities to increase access to crisis / health services.
