UWM Veteran VISTA Project - WOVIN Position

WOVIN is a veterans organization whose mission is to educate, advocate, and increase public awareness of the increasing number of at-risk, homeless, and under-served women veterans, and to help those women seeking information to help themselves and their families. The VISTA will help build the capacity of the WOVIN organization, which is a program housed within the Milwaukee Homeless Veterans Initiative that serves women veterans. Women veterans are the fastest growing segment of the homeless population, and a quarter of them have children. Many have complex challenges, including a history of sexual trauma inflicted while serving in the military, which can lead to distrust in military agencies and channels, and male authority. This can cause them to avoid turning to the VA and other support services, and sometimes not identify as a person who has served. This dynamic leads to high need, but few places to turn for support and other resources. The goal of this VISTA will be to help build the capacity of WOVIN by creating both tangible resources for the organization and its client base, but also a network of women veterans in southeastern Wisconsin. This will be done by attending community events to raise awareness about WOVIN, and by connecting with existing resources that interface with women veteran services. The VISTA will also build a volunteer team to assist with WOVIN services and promotion. This VISTA position begins on July 29, 2017, however a training occurs the week prior. We are seeking a VISTA with a background or interest in women’s issues, veteran issues, and program development. It will be important that the VISTA will possess the ability to work independently to establish a new program, and understand the needs of women veterans. For more information about this position please contact Laurie Marks at lmarks@uwm.edu, or call (414)229-3161.
