UWM Veteran VISTA Project - Women Vets on Campus

UW-Milwaukee serves more military-affiliated students than any other campus in Wisconsin. While military-affiliated students arrive at campus with additional life experience, they also often feel isolated from the general campus community. This issue of disconnection and isolation is even greater for female students from the military; many of whom report some form of harassment or bullying that makes them feel disconnected from male-dominated veterans’ community on campus. The primary goal of this VISTA position will be to help UWM launch new initiatives to increase awareness and engagement of women veterans issues, and help build a community among military-affiliated women on campus. As a result, this project will work towards bridging the gap in services for women veterans. This VISTA will build a network of women veterans on the UWM campus, to aid in student success, to bridge the gap in campus services for women veterans, and connect women veterans with one another. The VISTA will create systems that better connect women veterans to resources on-campus and in the community, and will catalog existing resources and assess gaps in current resources. The VISTA will also build a network of women veteran students through social media platforms and face-to-face programming aimed at this population. This VISTA position begins on July 29, 2017, however a training occurs the week prior. We are seeking a VISTA with a background or interest in women’s issues, veteran issues, program development, and community building. It will be important that the VISTA will possess the ability to work independently to establish a new program, and understand the needs of women veteran college students. For more information about this position please contact Laurie Marks at lmarks@uwm.edu, or call (414)229-3161.
