UWM Veteran VISTA Project - Disaster Relief Position

The UW-Milwaukee (UWM) Center for Community-Based Learning, Leadership, and Research is largely responsible for helping the campus to carry out its civic mission. As part of this effort we will be engaging three VISTAs to work on veterans’ issues in the greater Milwaukee area. UWM is the leading veteran serving university in Wisconsin. The Disaster Relief Team Developer VISTA will help to establish partnerships with non-profits that engage in community building after disasters, and then build a team of students, faculty, staff, and alumni who want to be a part of a volunteer response team when disaster happens. This team will largely be composed veterans in our campus community, but will include civilian members as well. The Disaster Relief Team Developer VISTA will create materials and systems used to establish and facilitate a new disaster relief team on campus, composed of volunteers who want to make a difference in the community as part of their UWM experience. The VISTA will recruit members to the team by meeting with interested students, departments, and students, and then facilitate the training they need to be an effective member of the team. The VISTA will also coordinate teambuilding activities amongst the DRT and local regularly scheduled service opportunities they can engage in. We are seeking a VISTA with a background or interest in volunteer recruitment, teambuilding facilitation and training, and the ability to work independently to establish a new program. The VISTA will enjoy working with amazing, civic-minded members of a campus community who want to make a difference in the lives of others.
