FIT VISTA- Communication and Development VISTA

Nestled in the beautiful Lakes Region of New Hampshire with its hiking, boating, swimming, skiing and so many other outdoor recreational activities, Belknap House offers a unique opportunity to a VISTA member to join a passionate community team to make the difference for those families who are economically disadvantaged and homeless. In 2014, a group of caring community members in Laconia, NH had a vision of a warm, welcoming shelter for homeless families to meet the increasing needs within Belknap County. Through extensive fundraising and community support, the Board of Directors was able to purchase and renovate an iconic building close to downtown in April 2016. Belknap House opened its doors to homeless families in February 2017 with a mission to provide families in Belknap County a safe shelter, especially in cold weather months, when children are most at risk, and to empower families to become self-sufficient and independent by providing opportunities of education and resources available to them. In addition to having shelter, families will be supported in accessing community resources to build their capacity to be self-sufficient and economically secure. Open as an emergency family shelter from October-May, it provides an affordable housing alternative for summer visitors, operating as a summer hostel from June-September. The hostel will generate an additional funding source. Supports are provided using a strength-based, Two-Generation approach – an approach that enhances the well-being and life opportunities of both parents and children. Services provided to the families include case management, ensuring incremental progress in finding housing and employment as well as connection to a variety of other community resources to address social service needs, medical care, mental health and basic needs; life skills education, including time management, money management, organization; and individual and family short-term counseling and coaching.
