Tribal VISTA: Fort Peck Community College

The Great Plains Region and the Prairie Pothole Region face many climate change vulnerabilities. According to the EPA, changes in water availability will make agriculture irrigation more difficult and can threaten important wetland habitats. Moreover, warmer winters will effect seasonal growing cycles which also impact the timing of tribal rituals and the sustainability of culturally important plants and animals. While the Fort Peck Office of Environmental Protection is aware of these vulnerabilities, the majority of their work focuses on monitoring and regulatory activities. The VISTA’s role would help bring the capacity to develop the community based programming to combat the negative effects of climate change. The VISTA’s strategic placement based in Fort Peck Community College would allow them to be more accessible to the people in the community. The educational programming the VISTA develops will address climate vulnerabilities by increasing community interest and increasing community awareness of the issues.

Member Duties : Our community outreach exists through the work of our agriculture/extension and K-12 outreach. The VISTA would work with individuals involved in these community services. Through this built capacity, Fort Peck Tribes will maintain sustainable solutions to climate vulnerabilities. VISTA will visit with Tribal Elders to plan and grow a medicine wheel garden. They will collaborate with stakeholders to create a composting program to fertilize the gardens. The VISTA will host talks and assemblies in all the schools across Fort Peck Reservation along with community based talks to communicate these important concepts to individuals and families that are feeling the direct effects of the climate vulnerabilities in the area. The VISTA will connect with all the stakeholders in the community that have an interest in conservation.
