Citizen Schools MA 8th Grade Academy & Alumni Services

Citizen Schools envisions a day when all students are able to develop the 21st century and social emotional skills required for them to succeed as adults. Citizen Schools’ capstone program year – Eighth Grade Academy (8GA) –serves as a bridge between middle school and high school. Through 8GA, students build relationships with AmeriCorps Teaching Fellows, receive 1:1 tutoring in the Writing Program, develop academic and professional skills through enrichment electives, and participate in a series of city explorations. Every element of 8GA is focused on providing students with access to a variety of college and career pathways and building students’ skills to ensure they are prepared for high school and beyond. Starting in the 2017-2018 school year, a series of new program elements focused on 21st century and socio-emotional skill development will be piloted for the 8GA curriculum. These program elements will include a focus on STEM career pathways and will round out the 5th-7th grade program to ensure students are ready to successfully transition to high school. Beyond the 8GA year, Citizen Schools has realized that in order to truly close the opportunity gap and ensure students have the skills, access, and beliefs they need to succeed as adults, the organization must expand its direct service model to work with 9th grade students. Ninth grade is a critical year in students’ academic journey. As students gain more independence during their transition to high school, they also gain more personal responsibility and a larger academic workload. The consequences for failure are increasingly negative and impactful on future success. Ninth grade has the highest retention rate and dropout rate among all four high school years. During the 2017-2018 school year, Citizen Schools will pilot of series of programs focused on supporting 8GA alumni during their 9th grade year, including an internship program, community service program, and an Alumni Leadership Council.
