WACC – WWU Sterling Meadows VISTA Education Coordinator
The VISTA member will institutionalize the Collective Impact Partnership with the goal of sustaining our commitment to providing essential academic, social-emotional, and nutritional services to some of the most economically disadvantaged K-12 youth in our community. The Collective Impact is a partnership between Western Washington University’s Woodring College of Education, Bellingham Public Schools, and Sterling Meadows. The Sterling Meadows Education Coordinator will coordinate education programming for Sterling Meadows, a Mercy Housing complex for agricultural and farmworker families living at or below the poverty level. Most youth are bilingual in Spanish and English. Primary responsibilities will include formalizing the program management tools for the educational program to be accessible in following years, and eventually implemented by other Mercy Housing communities. Volunteer coordination including training and supporting college student service-learners to provide homework help and support to K-12 youth living at Sterling Meadows. The VISTA member will also coordinate garden service projects and programming for the Sterling Paz Community Garden VISTA project. The VISTA member joins the statewide Washington Campus Compact VISTA team whose members increase the capacity of campus-community partnerships by leveraging campus resources and community assets to address the critical issues of education access and food security. Member Duties : The VISTA member will institutionalize the project for long-term sustainability and success: 1) Formalize volunteer policies and procedures, program calendar and timeline, 2) Formalize volunteer orientation and best practices to support college student volunteers to provide after-school enrichment activities, 3) Coordinate and formalize best practices for Paz Garden program to provide nutritious food to Sterling Meadows families, 4) Identify grant opportunities, write grants, and secure funding for permanent Education Coordinator position.
