MTCC - Butte America Foundation- Community Radio Education

The Butte America Foundation was founded to educate the public by providing information and tools to uphold the tenets of social justice. BAmF has worked in Butte, Montana since August of 2013. Montana ranks 8th lowest in the nation for college graduation rates, with less than half of all college students graduating within six years. Rural school districts typically have fewer financial resources and rural communities lack concentrated opportunities to assist young people in leading healthy, positive, successful lives. Only 31.5% of Butte residents age 25 or older hold a Bachelor's degree or higher; the median household income in Butte is $39,146 compared to Montana’s average $49,509. Montana jobs in STEM fields are the higher paid in the state, increasing access and programming in STEM will help Butte students rise out of poverty. BAmF’s mission is to educate the public by providing information and tools to uphold the tenets of social justice. BAmF recognizes the community need to engage youth in building tangible skill sets to help break out of the cycle of poverty and put them on the road to lifelong learning. This project is two fold: building STEM-based skills in underserved youth as well as connecting Butte high school and college students to service-learning opportunities. Service learning is strongly correlated with student success both in high school and in post-secondary settings. The project will engage high school and college students in audio production and broadcasting equipment, as well as engage students in community service to help educate and improve their community through story telling, and revitalizing historic community buildings. This project will help underserved students graduate high school and college and achieve higher paying jobs.
