*MTCC - Friends Forever Mentoring - Youth Leadership

Friends Forever Mentoring, located in Polson, MT, is focused on creating positive change in local youth and providing them with the skills needed to succeed and be happy in life. Matching students with a mentor provides them with a positive and sharing relationship that they can depend on for support and guidance. Confederated Salish Kootenai Tribal members and their descendants are a minority on their own reservation due to the Allotment and Homesteaders Acts, which created a checkerboard pattern of land ownership, reducing the size of the reservation and decreasing the centrality of Tribal life. Historical loss and trauma, generational poverty, ongoing cultural oppression, lack of equal access to employment, and rural isolation all contribute to feelings of alienation and hopelessness among Tribal members. These demographics make cultural ties and Tribal identity difficult to maintain, which in turn contribute to high rates of substance abuse, child abuse/neglect, family violence, physical and mental health problems, suicide, and other indicators of distress. Native American graduation rates are 10% to 20% lower than the white population within Flathead Reservation high schools. Friends Forever Mentoring (FFM) sees a need to nourish and maintain its foundational offerings, such as mentoring and family connections which are fundamental to participant success, while providing leadership to local educators in understanding the needs and impact of restorative justice. Along with these core areas, the program wants to increase its development of youth leaders and offer a culturally grounded, interactive Summer Mentoring Program that is connected to all family members. Another important part of FFM strong foundation is the solid network of partnerships it has established, along with those that can be developed. These foundational pieces offer a vital and ongoing level of program stability that instills community confidence and positive youth outcomes.
