* MTCC - Libby K-12 Schools Program of Innovation

This project will help alleviate poverty by increasing workplace skills and employment opportunities for high school students after they graduate. The Libby School District serves a community of 11,000. The total student population is approximately 1146 students. As of May 1, 2017, 56% of the District’s students, PK-12 are eligible for Free/Reduced Lunch (ES, 64%; MS, 61%, HS, 42%). One the major issues facing the community today is that a significant number of our students fail to earn a high school diploma. With a drop high school completion rate of 85% in 2016, Libby scored 10% below the state average and ranked as one of Montana’s lowest scoring high schools. Of the 89 graduates from the Class of 2016 only 26% choose to further their education. Northwestern Montana is an isolated area where many students lack exposure to college and career opportunities. The mission of the program will be to ensure career pathways with hands-on technical experience and advance opportunities to participating Juniors and Seniors. The VISTA will help support Lincoln County School Districts, businesses, post-secondary education, and other pertinent entities will collaborate to offer hands-on, career focused, educational opportunities for students in Libby, Troy, and Eureka. The program will allow us to offer opportunities at a county level versus district level. In collaboration with other entities, we are ensuring students are better prepared to enter a productive workforce or opt for a college education within the region. Due to Lincoln County’s high unemployment rate (10%), high poverty demographics (18.6%), and low college bound population (26%), the VISTA will provide additional career support for our at-risk population of students. The work of this project will add to the 21st century research and serve as a model for other Montana Title I schools in need of improvement.
