MTCC - Ecology Project International Environmental Literacy

Ecology Project International improves and inspires science education and conservation efforts through field-based student-scientist partnerships. Based in Missoula, we have engaged more than 30,000 youth in hands-on science since 2000. Youth from rural Montana communities lack opportunities to engage in outdoor science learning and mentorship. According to pre-course assessments, the majority of local EPI students have never participated in a field-based science experience or visited a National Park. Through their participation with EPI, environmental literacy scores of 2016 Montana students increased 9% according to pre- and post-course assessments. EPI offers a truly unique program that allows students to work alongside professional scientists from the National Park Service, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, and non-profit conservation organizations in the setting of the world’s first national park, Yellowstone. Students develop hands-on inquiry, science, and critical thinking skills while inspiring future careers – and in some cases, providing science education credits to allow struggling students to graduate. It also expands their horizons and changes their perspectives. The VISTA will help evaluate the effectiveness of EPI’s program in increasing environmental literacy, and aim to improve those outcomes by offering more resources to low-income Montana students. This out of school and summer programming will improve graduation and academic success for underserved Montana students, providing them the educational means out of poverty.
