MTCC -MNA- Building Career Opportunities for College Grads

Montana Nonprofit Association (MNA) is a membership organization of more than 600 nonprofits of all sizes and mission types from across Montana. Our mission is to provide leadership to the nonprofit sector and partner with nonprofits to build a more effective and sustainable nonprofit industry in the state. Montana has a significant percentage of the population living in poverty – above the national average for adults age 18-64. Creating employment pathways through credentialing directly addresses poverty by opening educational opportunities that lead to higher wages. In a recent meeting between MNA and representatives from the Montana Department of Labor, credentialing, internships and apprenticeships came up as a priority because of the relationships between these types of educational pathways and greater employment success. MNA is particularly interested in increasing access and success for Montana’s low-income and Native American populations. Montana ranks 8th lowest in the nation for college graduation rates, with less than half of all college students graduating within six years. Service learning is strongly correlated with student success both in high school and in post-secondary settings. By focusing on service learning in nonprofits, MNA helps increase student success while also addressing a growing need for nonprofit leadership. MNA is launching a three year initiative to increase the number of Next Gen individuals, with a specific focus on low-income, Native American populations, who engage with nonprofits as board members, other volunteers, or staff. This project will alleviate poverty by helping underserved populations graduate college and leverage job and career opportunities and growth.
