VYT-Montpelier Community Services Dept.
PROGRAM: The VT Youth Tomorrow AmeriCorps VISTA Program (VYT) supports effective initiatives that help low-income youth and families develop job skills & academic proficiency, gain access to affordable housing & healthy food, and cultivate the social assets that they need to transcend poverty, avoid unhealthy behaviors such as opioid use, and ultimately thrive. SITE: Montpelier’s 3 departmental divisions--Recreation, Parks & Trees, and Senior Activity Center--provide diverse activities and services that serve thousands of community members of all ages. Parks provides opportunities for outdoor recreation in City parks, as well as many community events, including the Enchanted Forest; hundreds of youth & adults have the opportunity to engage with nature. Recreation provides an array of programming for all ages, including camps, outdoor pool, youth baseball, arts classes, and more. The Senior Activity Center provides over 1,500 older adults with healthy aging & lifelong learning opportunities, including over 80 classes, ranging from writing to yoga. The VISTA develops resources & systems to make us more effective, efficient, and able to engage & serve more people. The member (1) enhances effective volunteer recruitment, and management systems, allowing us to do more with our limited resources; (2) diversifies fundraising streams, helping to ensure sustainability; and (3) enhances donor stewardship, building both financial & community support for our programs. In addition to the services we support, there are public transportation options and bicycle paths, an active library, concerts, engaging educational programs, and a strong sense of creativity, social justice and community involvement.
