VYT-Montpelier Community Services Dept.
The City of Montpelier Community Services Department provides for the health and wellbeing of Montpelier residents and visitors by offering cultural, recreational, social, and outdoor opportunities for all people of all ages. The three divisions of the Community Services Department—Recreation, Parks and Trees, and Senior Activity Center provide an array of activities and services that serve thousands of community members of all ages. The Parks Division provides opportunities for outdoor recreation, managing the beloved Hubbard Park and several other parks and hosting the annual Enchanted Forest event. Hundreds of youth and adults have the opportunity to engage with nature. The Recreation Division provides an array of programming for all ages, including camps, outdoor pool, youth baseball, arts classes, and more. The Montpelier Senior Activity Center provides over 1,100 older adults with healthy aging and lifelong learning opportunities, including over 70 classes, ranging from writing to yoga. The service of the AmeriCorps VISTA member will develop systems to make us more effective and efficient and able to serve more people. The member will--(1) create more effective volunteer recruitment, management, and recognition, increasing systems allowing us do more with our limited resources; (2) diversify fundraising streams, helping to ensure sustainability; and (3) enhance donor stewardship, building both financial and community support for our programs. While Montpelier is the smallest capital city in the U.S., there are many free and low-cost amenities. In addition to the services our Department provides through the recreation center, senior center, and parks system, there is local public transportation options and bicycle paths, an active library, concerts, engaging educational programs, and a strong sense of social justice and community involvement.
