Backside Learning Center's Gallop into Summer Associate

At the Backside Learning Center, we support equine workers and their families in the pursuit of their personal and professional dreams. We do this by providing educational opportunities, assistance in navigating and accessing local resources, and by creating community. In a caring and respectful setting, our clients develop their skills and knowledge with classes, tutoring, and direct assistance tailored to their needs. The Backside Learning Center’s summer VISTA positions will aid in the development, implementation and evaluation of our Summer Reading and Activities Program. Through outreach, research, and planning the two summer VISTAs will help develop appropriate guided reading activities for summer volunteers to carry out. The VISTAs will work in close coordination with partner organizations, and will be responsible for all aspects of organizing excursions to various places of interest within the community. The overall project will aim to keep youth on a progressive academic path while also exposing them to cultural events as well as educational workshops on various topics, with the hope of creating well-rounded social and academic development. Academic activities will focus mainly on reading and math to further solidify previously learned concepts and strategies and/or introduce new ones that will aid them in the coming school year. In order to prevent the youth population of the equine industry in Louisville, Kentucky from experiencing academic regression during the summer months, the summer VISTAs will develop reading discussions, mini-lessons, and activities that are engaging and challenging for all ages.
