CAIR-MN VISTA Outreach Coordinator

The Council on American Islamic Relations, Minnesota Chapter (CAIR-MN) is the State’s only civil rights and advocacy group serving religious, racial and ethnic minorities facing discrimination. CAIR-MN is a 501(c) 3 nonprofit organization and was established in 2007 after a series of hate incidents against local mosques occurred. Community members united to address the growing number of discriminatory practices against Muslims and those perceived to be Muslims (including Sikhs, Hindus, Arab Christians, and others). CAIR-MN was born to address the rise of hate against the Muslim community in Minnesota. CAIR-MN handled 8 cases that year and to date, the organization has resolved over 1,200 cases, provided diversity trainings to over 60,000 people across the state of Minnesota, and worked with numerous media personnel to provide a balanced view on Muslims and Islam. CAIR-MN has gained trust in the Muslim community and established itself as a credible and relevant partner within the greater Minnesotan community.

Member Duties : The VISTA project will address barriers to access to employment Muslims face due to on-the-job discrimination and misunderstanding of religious accommodation, which overall affects the economic status of Minnesota Muslims, and particularly the Somali and East African communities. // Our goal is to build capacity in the form of expanding CAIR-MN’s training network by researching and building a database resource of Minnesota employers and other organizations such as nonprofits and government agencies. The intention of building the database is to then do outreach to the employers by region and arrange CAIR-MN trainings for employers and their employees. We want to reach as many MN employers as possible, and would offer these trainings regionally and for multiple employers. This will directly reduce incidents of discrimination and underemployment of minority and new immigrants of different cultures and backgrounds.
