Description of Silicon Valley HealthCorp: Silicon Valley HealthCorp is a collaboration between the Health Trust and 3 partner agencies to mobilize six VISTA members throughout San Jose. Silicon Valley HealthCorps VISTAs will work at our partner sites to increase the availability and affordability of fresh, healthy food through enhancing existing food distribution models and developing capacity for low-income residents’ to grow their own produce. Silicon Valley HealthCorps VISTA is currently recruiting members for 2017-2018. All positions are full-time, year-long positions beginning in August. Description of Program Site - Veggielution: Veggielution is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization based at Emma Prusch Farm Park in East San Jose. Through our unique partnership with the City of San José Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services, we provide not only healthy produce, but community engagement, youth education and professional development programs for all ages. Veggielution is located in the Mayfair neighborhood of East San José. The Mayfair is a working-class immigrant community where nearly half of residents are foreign-born and most speak a language other than English at home. The Mayfair is 70% Latino and 22% Asian/Pacific Islander (primarily Vietnamese).

Member Duties : The First Saturday Program Coordinator will lead Veggielution’s First Saturday program. Through shared meals, conversations, and experiences, First Saturday supports Veggielution’s efforts to build social capital in East San Jose and improve the health outcomes of low-income residents. We begin each First Saturday with open air yoga class. We then host Veggielution Cocina, a Spanish-language cooking class, Youth Garden, and Farm Stand. Farm volunteer opportunities are also available to community members. We share a community potluck lunch then finish the day with Art in the Garden. In addition to leading the First Saturday program, the VISTA will provide support to Veggielution’s Eastside Grange, a community food hub and culinary incubator program. The VISTA will report directly to Eastside Grange Program Manager.
