Silicon Valley HealthCorps - La Mesa Verde

Description of Silicon Valley HealthCorp: Silicon Valley HealthCorp is a collaboration between the Health Trust and 3 partner agencies to mobilize six VISTA members throughout San Jose. Silicon Valley HealthCorps VISTAs will work at our partner sites to increase the availability and affordability of fresh, healthy food through enhancing existing food distribution models and developing capacity for low-income residents’ to grow their own produce. Silicon Valley HealthCorps VISTA is currently recruiting members for 2017-2018. All positions are full-time, year-long positions beginning in August. Description of La Mesa Verde at Sacred Heart Community Services: La Mesa Verde is a network of urban gardeners who build access to healthy food in San Jose. We are a mutual support community that grows our own food and organizes around food justice issues. LMV provides organic garden materials to 50 new low income families a year, and hosts yearlong classes for new families and continuing members. We are part of Sacred Heart Community Service, which provides essential services, creates mutual support systems, and organizes to end poverty.

Member Duties : The La Mesa Verde Volunteer Network Coordinator inspires, trains, and supports short and long-term volunteers to participate meaningfully in a garden network aimed at increasing access to fruits and vegetables in San Jose. Specifically, the LMV VNC is responsible for supporting a volunteer committee that leads the construction of new gardens and a volunteer committee that recruits new families and promotes LMV’s work. We place a special emphasis on motivating LMV gardeners to take on more ownership of each committee. The LMV VNC also works in tandem with LMV staff to build our capacity in hosting sustainable garden classes, resource shares, network-wide events, and implementing local solutions to improve access to good food.
