YMCA Immigrant & Opportunity Youth VISTA Project (UofRight)

VISTA member will primarily build volunteer infrastructure of student programs tackling poverty and the school-to-prison pipeline, develop partnerships within our community, and investigate and develop new possible resources to support these programs. The University YMCA is not a typical pool or gym Y, but instead has been a vital part of the University of Illinois’ campus and Champaign County community life since its formation in 1873. The Y develops students who share a commitment to making our world a better place. The Y has a proud legacy of responding to community needs and serving as a bridge between the university and community by working with social justice, protecting our environment encouraging interfaith collaboration and promoting global engagement. The Y is located right off the main Quad of the University of Illinois campus, offering an exciting work atmosphere with a close-knit staff of about 8 professional staff members. We recently hired a Student Programs Coordinator, who will help supervise this position. Both positions will have training opportunities. The summer months will be focused on planning and onboarding, and program development and fundraising will hit the ground running in August. This VISTA will also work with our Immigrant Programs Capacity Coordinator. The great thing about our Champaign-Urbana community is the access to exciting micro-urban life with a low cost of living. The Y will offer full transportation access pass to the Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District buses, which is an award-winning transit system. Champaign-Urbana is also a bike friendly community.
