NYC VISTA-Community-Based Strategies (NYC ACS)

The Administration for Children’s Services (ACS) Division of Preventive Services (DPS) seeks an NYC VISTA member to support programming within Community-Based Strategies, a new branch within DPS committed to empowering children, families, and communities through innovative, community-driven design, implementation, and management. Community-Based Strategies is launching a new demonstration project to expand ACS’ preventive continuum to include primary prevention. Designed to intervene with families before harm occurs, the new Family Enrichment Centers will provide a welcoming, supportive environment where parents and children can participate in programming, classes, coaching, and other activities designed to strengthen protective factors and promote family stability. The services and resources provided at each Family Enrichment Center will be determined by the community as each center aims to address the needs of children and families in those communities. Families will be able to access resources before and after child welfare involvement to meet existing gaps in the New York City’s service continuum. Community-Based Strategies also houses the Crossover Youth Practice Model, a multi-agency, cross-system model that aims to reduce youth involvement in the juvenile justice system and specifically uses policies and guidelines to allow child welfare and juvenile justice professionals to collaborate, share information, and coordinate service planning for the youth to achieve better outcomes. To date, the Crossover Youth Practice Model has been expanded to all five boroughs with the highest number of justice involved youth receiving preventive services.
