Hartford THRIVE!-Youth Money School VISTA

Thrive means to grow and develop powerfully. The vision of the Hartford THRIVE! project is to live in a community where every member has access to resources that allows them to thrive. Picture a tree in full bloom. If you denied that tree access to water, soil, and sunlight you would have jeopardized its ability to grow to its full potential. Similarly, every person needs access to three basic needs to bloom: food, housing, and economic security. At Hartford Thrive! 9 AmeriCorps VISTA members at 5 non profits all build and expand programs that create access to one of these three vital nutrients and much more. Youth Money School VISTA will serve at Connecticut Association for Human Services (CAHS). Founded in 1910, CAHS promotes family economic security strategies that empower low-income working families to achieve financial independence. Our mission is to end poverty and engage, equip and empower all families in Connecticut to build a secure future. CAHS works to reduce poverty and build family economic success (FES) through outreach, education, and policy work. We inform service providers and others to advocate for policy and practice changes that move low- to moderate-income (LMI) families toward prosperity. Most efforts are directed at families under 130 percent of the federal poverty level and all at families under 200 percent of the federal poverty level. Youth Money School trains volunteers and pairs them with agencies who serve youth, in order to provide interactive and fun workshops on financial issues that speak to low income youth living in the Hartford area. Our goal is to help youth develop better money habits that they can use to get ahead in life.
