Strong City/IRC Economic Empowerment Family Mentor

The global mission of the International Rescue Committee (IRC) is to respond to the world's worst humanitarian crises and to help people survive and rebuild their lives. In Baltimore, the IRC resettles newly arrived refugees and provides them with the opportunities and resources they need to succeed in their new community. During their first year in America, many refugees face barriers to accessing financial services and navigating the U.S. financial system. Our current Economic Empowerment VISTA has made major contributions to our clients’ financial integration and financial literacy by establishing a bank orientation program, building financial literacy curricula, and working to streamline the IRC’s financial literacy interventions. This position is sponsored by Strong City Baltimore in Baltimore, MD, and the VISTA member will serve with the International Rescue Committee (IRC) in Baltimore, MD. Strong City sponsors 30 VISTA projects at nonprofit, government, and community organizations throughout Baltimore City and Maryland. Established in 1969 to help neighborhoods become safer, better places to live, Strong City's mission is to build and strengthen neighborhoods and people. Strong City will provide support to the IRC and the VISTA member throughout the year, including recruitment, training, resources, and professional development opportunities.

Member Duties : The VISTA will promote the financial integration of newly arrived refugees by leveraging community support. Specifically, the VISTA will: 1) Coordinate the development of the financial mentorship program. 2) Create a system to support clients’ income tax preparation. 3) Build formal partnerships with community organizations offering support to clients. In addition, the incoming VISTA will sustain the progress made by the first-year VISTA with respect to bank orientation. These activities contribute to the overall goal of the project, which is to empower refugees by helping them access financial services and giving them the tools they need to make informed financial decisions. Candidates should have an interest and compassion for working with vulnerable populations. Having previously been exposed to working in a multi-cultural environment or been in a role that demanded cultural sensitivity would greatly serve the upcoming VISTA in their work.
