* BMVP - Full STEAM Ahead – Expanding Summer Education

Wise Wonders is an emerging children’s museum and nonprofit organization with creative development exhibits and stations that allow self-directed learning for building creativity, divergent thinking, problem solving and encouraging innovation. There are nearly 3,500 children experiencing poverty in Billings and the Wise Wonder’s Children’s Museum is located in an area surrounded by a 45% poverty rate. Access to STEAM educational programming in neighborhood out-of-school facilities is a key component to fighting poverty. Low income children exposed to STEM educational opportunities in experiential programs are more likely to embrace other educational opportunities in science, technology, engineering and math. The top five careers in the nation are rooted in STEM education (registered nurses, software developers, pharmacists, medical assistants and database administrators, US News, 2012). The goal of this project is to prevent summer learning loss and improving academic engagement and performance by increasing the number of students completing VISTA-supported STEM / STEAM education programs.
