Boston Partners in Education Development Coordinator VISTA

Founded in 1966, Boston Partners in Education (Boston Partners) enhances the academic achievement and nurtures the personal growth of Boston's public school students by providing them with focused, individualized in-school volunteer support. Our primary goal is to support students in grades K-12, providing the extra attention they need to stay in school and graduate. Boston Partners recruits, trains, places, and supports community volunteers (academic mentors) to work in Boston Public Schools (BPS) classrooms with students one-on-one, in small groups, and in whole classroom settings. We focus on reaching students who might otherwise "fall through the cracks"—those children who have gaps in their learning, are struggling academically and personally, and can succeed with the encouragement and guidance of a caring adult academic mentor. On the heels of our 50th anniversary campaign – a celebration of 50 years of service to the Boston Public Schools – Boston Partners in Education aims to serve 25%, or 750, more students in one-on-one and small group academic mentoring matches over the next three to five years. The Development Coordinator will help create systems to identify and nurture larger donors. The selected VISTA candidate will be a member of the Boston Cares AmeriCorps VISTA program of approximately 15 VISTA members serving at 10 Greater Boston organizations. Pre-Service Orientation (PSO) for this position will be conducted online at the Boston Partners office beginning August 28.

Member Duties : The Development Coordinator will focus on building a system for identifying major donors and creating steps for moving them to higher levels of giving. Special attention will be given to volunteers and Big Cheese Readers who are not dollar donors, both of which already demonstrate a commitment to our mission. Activities will include: Establishing criteria for who qualifies as a major donor; revitalizing an existing leadership giving society by researching similar organizations’ approach; recommending benefits for various levels of giving; designing plans to steward donors including regular communication, possible events design and strategies for recognizing donors. The VISTA will have the satisfaction of having created a system for identifying, acknowledging and stewarding donors that can be used for many years to come. The skills acquired and experience gained by the VISTA will be useful for work with other non-profits, or can be used in the for profit environment.
