KRM Cultural Exchange and Mentoring Coordinator VISTA
 
 
 
Kentucky Refugee Ministries is dedicated to providing resettlement services to refugees through faith- and agency-based co-sponsorship in order to promote self-sufficiency and successful integration into our community. KRM is committed to offering access to community resources and opportunities and to promoting awareness of diversity for the benefit of the whole community. The Kentucky Refugee Ministries (KRM) Cultural Exchange and Mentoring Coordinator VISTA works to expand opportunities for community engagement through cultural exchange and mentorship programming designed to reduce newly-arrived refugees’ isolation, improve integration outcomes, and ultimately empower refugee participants to rise out of poverty. The overall goal of this project is to continue to refine and grow the cultural exchange and mentoring programming for refugees in need of social support and to work with agency staff to ensure that the mentor programs will remain sustainable after the VISTA volunteer’s term is completed.

Member Duties : The AmeriCorps VISTA member will refine and grow the existing cultural exchange and mentoring program at KRM that assists refugees in need of social support. The VISTA will refine placement and ongoing training process of all mentors to ensure effective mentor/mentee matches. To increase KRM's bilingual mentor pool, the VISTA will conduct outreach and actively engage with local universities, ethnic community-based organizations, the Kentucky Office for Refugees, and professional organizations. The VISTA will collaborate with staff to engage in ongoing assessment of the effectiveness of the program and summarize positive outcomes of cultural exchange/mentoring programs. Importantly, the VISTA will also focus on developing a plan of action for future programming.
