Summer NeighborWorks VISTA, Mutual Housing -Youth Activities

Mutual Housing California was created in 1988 by a group of activists and elected officials. Our mission is to develop and operate permanently affordable housing that builds strong and stable communities through resident participation and leadership development. In pursuit of our mission we have developed – either through renovation or new construction --19 mutual housing communities that are home to more than 4,000 low income and very low income families (most Mutual Housing residents earn less than 40 percent of area median income). We are also in the process of building one of the first GLBTQ senior housing communities in Northern California. Our community organizing staff uses an asset-based community development model to identify and train new neighborhood leaders. These leaders are engaged in multicultural neighborhood revitalization efforts that impact the fundamental quality of life in our region’s most impoverished neighborhoods. Summer time, which children are out of school, is a very idle time for many youth. During summer vacation, with school no longer in session, many food-insecure children lose access to meals for free or reduced prices. During the school year, nutritious meals are available through the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs. But those programs end when school lets out for the summer. Children in our Mutual Housing California communities do not need to go hungry this summer because summer nutrition programs can help to fill the hunger gap. Mutual Housing California is committed to ensuring that at this time, in partnership with United Way California Capital Region, we provide youth with a nutritional meal. After completing the meal, they will have an opportunity to participate in enrichment activities that will include work to impact brain development by reading aloud, reading and/or sketching and other enrichment activities.
