MDCCC Access to Justice Program at CASA

The Access to Justice Program at CASA has three primary goals: 1. Expand CASA’s network of pro-bono and low-bono attorneys. 2. Strengthen CASA’s relationships with other non-profit service providers. 3. Expand CASA’s network of community volunteers. All of these goals are aligned around a common objective of reducing the barriers poverty imposes on access to justice in the communities we serve. The Access to Justice Program will be housed in CASA’s legal services department. The legal program is supervised by the senior manager of legal services and is situated within CASA’s Department of Human Services. Since its inception more than fifteen years ago, the CASA legal program has been at the forefront of creative strategies to combat the many injustices low-income communities face in the state of Maryland and the Washington metro region. The strategies have included individual representation to recover a quarter of a million dollars each year in unpaid wages; liberation, back wages and legal status for victims of human trafficking; class action litigation to address disparate treatment of immigrant driver’s license applicants; organizing to publicly pressure unscrupulous employers to meet their legal obligations; support to CASA’s vibrant community organizing and political action department to stop immigration enforcement abuses, anti-immigrant ordinances, anti-immigrant hate crimes. The Access to Justice Program at CASA will provide capacity-building support to the legal program, and the organization as a whole, allowing CASA to more effectively deliver these services by strengthening our referral networks and expanding our connections to partners in both the private and non-profit sector.
