Summit Academy Community Resource Navigator (EMERGE)

This position is part of the EMERGE VISTA Cohort. Summit Academy OIC is an accredited vocational education and training school in North Minneapolis serving low-income communities of color, predominately African Americans. Ninety-five percent of our student population are living at and/or below the federal poverty line. From a starting income of approximately $5,000 at time of enrollment, Summit graduates earn on average $33,000 after completion of twenty weeks of training in construction or healthcare in their first year of employment. Summit also offers a 10-week contextualized GED program providing adults with the right skills and credentials in only 30 weeks (or twenty weeks if they enter with a GED or High School Diploma) to move into career pathways with sustainable wages. Summit has five enrollments per year and trains approximately 700 adults annually. Students enrolled at Summit face significant barriers from childcare, transportation, housing to food insecurity, or a criminal background (approximately 40% of the construction program). Our advising team, support services department, and career services division work with our students to assist in addressing those barriers and partners with external community resources to refer students to additional support. At Summit Academy OIC, we believe that: “the best social service program in the world is a job” and employ training and advocacy as central tenants to address the economic and racial disparities in the State of Minnesota. Our core principles are focused on delivering the right training, the right skills, and the right social networks.
