Big Brothers Big Sisters of the National Capital Area (BBBSNCA) has successfully provided mentoring support services to the Capital Area since 1949. We have provided high quality, measurable, outcome-based, sustainable and scalable programs through innovative and collaborative partnerships with schools, Boys & Girls Clubs, corporations, local colleges/universities and other community organizations that bring complementary expertise and volunteer resources together around a common community need. Our partnership model is unique and significantly enhances the quality of our mentoring services and effectiveness in providing these services. This position is sponsored by Strong City Baltimore in Baltimore, MD; and the VISTA member will serve with Big Brothers Big Sisters of the National Capital Area in Hyattsville, MD. Strong City sponsors 30 VISTA projects at nonprofit, government, and community organizations throughout Baltimore City and Maryland. Established in 1969 to help neighborhoods become safer, better places to live, Strong City's mission is to build and strengthen neighborhoods and people. Strong City will provide support to Big Brothers Big Sisters and the VISTA member throughout the year, including recruitment, training, resources, and professional development opportunities, and meetings

Member Duties : Project goal: To build a network of mentor relationships that support youth in the Hyattsville community resulting in 35 mentoring relationships per year The VISTA will: 1) be trained by Big Brother Big Sisters on agency standards, recruitment, screening and support strategies for mentors and mentees; 2) in September, begin outreach to counselors, teachers, parent engagement assistants and parents; 3) begin recruitment of mentors, utilizing the resources and database of Big Brothers Big Sisters and City of Hyattsville; 4) conduct background screenings, and initial training and orientation; 5) match mentors and mentees into relationships; 6) research and apply for grants to sustain the work; 7) work with the BBBS Marketing and Communications Director on outcome accomplishments; 8) develop manual of protocol; 9) develop partnerships with social, faith-based and other organizations who agree to have their members serve as mentors, and/or supporters of the program.
