NYC VISTA-Career Preparation (NYC DOE)

NYC P-TECH schools aim to empower students to take charge of their lives and be ready for the world of tomorrow. Through a six-year program that seamlessly integrates rigorous academics, college coursework, and career exploration, NYC P-TECH schools redefine traditional school experiences and provide a seamless pathway for students to graduate with a high school diploma, an Associate degree, and workplace qualifications. No matter the students’ background, our schools are dedicated to helping young adults turn their college and career dreams into reality. We believe that all students deserve a high-quality education that adequately prepares them for college-level work. The NYC P-TECH schools are open to all students interested in the college and career pathways. These schools are designed for students typically underrepresented in higher education and the target career pathways in terms of race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status, disability status, gender, and more. Energy Tech High School, an NYC P-TECH school, offers students the unique opportunity to stay for up to six years, earning a high school diploma, an Associate Degree—free of cost—and important industry training and credentials. We prepare our students for competitive careers in engineering in the fast-growing energy industry. Our students will leave us ready to go directly into a range of careers or as strong candidates for four-year colleges. The 2017-18 school year will be one of significant growth in terms of adding new and deepening existing career partnerships. Key projects for the Career Preparation VISTA include managing several aspects of an industry mentoring program including recruitment and training of mentors, fundraising and grant administration, new employer partner recruitment and event planning, designing and leading staff training for a new system to manage student work placements in internships, and best practices research and dissemination to leadership.
