NYC VISTA-Financial Empowerment Services (NYC HRA)

The NYC Department of Social Services (DSS), which embodies the Human Resource Administration(HRA) and the Department of Homeless Services (DHS) is dedicated to fighting poverty and income inequality by providing New Yorkers in need with essential social service benefits, such a Temporary Cash Assistance. As the largest local social services agency in the country, HRA helps over 3 million New Yorkers through the administration of more than 12 major public assistance programs, with more than 14,000 employees and an operating budget of $9.7 billion. HRA has a wide array of employment programs designed to provide resources and help individual access services to attain economic self-sufficiency and wellbeing. HRA joins the citywide mission to reform policies and procedures to more effectively fight poverty and income inequality. In doing so, HRA is implementing a thorough and comprehensive approach to employment services that more fully recognizes the needs of individual clients in order to more effectively help each of them enter or return to the workforce and build sustainable careers. A component of this progression is to implement financial empowerment services in HRA programming. The NYC VISTA member will work alongside staff of the Family Independence Administration (FIA). In this role, the NYC VISTA member will take a lead role in building and managing capacity of the financial empowerment services offered in partnership with the NYC Department of Consumer Affairs/Office of Financial Empowerment (DCA OFE) to HRA clients.
