NYC VISTA-Financial Empowerment/Education Services (NYC HRA)

The New York City Human Resources Administration/Department of Social Services (HRA/DSS) is dedicated to fighting poverty and income inequality by providing New Yorkers in need with essential benefits, such as Temporary Cash Assistance. As the largest local social services agency in the country, HRA helps over 3 million New Yorkers through the administration of more than 12 major public assistance programs, with more than 14,000 employees and an operating budget of $9.7 billion. Overseeing an array of employments services to benefit its clients, HRA has implemented a more comprehensive approach which recognizes the needs of individuals in order to more effectively help each of them enter or return to the workforce and build sustainable careers. Maximizing education, training and employment-related services to open job opportunities and create the basis for building career pathways out of poverty drives this mission. The NYC VISTA member will work alongside staff of the Family Independence Administration (FIA), taking a lead role in building and managing a strategic initiative and media campaign designed to educate and empower Cash Assistance clients who are in the process of selecting and enrolling in various education and training programs. There is an emergent need to direct the focus on preventative education services by providing individuals with upfront information on college financial planning; program selection and school graduation outcomes, identifying lower and no cost programs; student loan debt management; and navigating the financial aid process (including completion of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) application). The goal is to enable clients to make a choice that will benefit them in the future.
