NYC VISTA-Emergency and Intervention Services (NYC HRA)

The New York City Human Resources Administration/Department of Social Services (HRA/DSS) provides temporary help to individuals and families with social service and economic needs to assist them in reaching self-sufficiency. HRA serves more than 3 million New Yorkers through essential and diverse programs and services that include temporary cash assistance, public health insurance, food stamps, home care for seniors and the disabled, child care, adult protective services, domestic violence, HIV/AIDS support services and child support enforcement. HRA is committed to supporting domestic violence survivors’ long-term needs by formalizing collaborative partnerships between New York City’s shelter systems and HRA-funded community-based domestic violence services (such as counseling, economic advocacy, and legal assistance). This partnership provides a continuum of care and facilitates a seamless transition into stable housing for clients leaving shelter. Preventing domestic violence is critical. The school based Teen Relationship Abuse Prevention Program (RAPP) is the most extensive domestic violence prevention program in New York City. Students learn to recognize and change destructive patterns of behavior before they are transferred to adult relationships. Social workers (MSW) deliver an array of services through four components: prevention classes, intervention counseling, staff development and training, and community outreach. RAPP promotes a safe and productive learning environment for students and staff.
