NYC VISTA-We Are New York (MOIA)

The We Are New York (WANY) program is the City’s supplemental English as a Second Language program. It uses the Emmy award winning series, We Are New York, in community based conversation classes to help English Language Learners (ELLs) practice English and learn about NYC resources. The conversation classes are led by pairs of trained volunteers who receive training in facilitation and community building skills. Partner sites receive technical support and teaching materials. Each of the 10 episodes in the series has corresponding educational materials that are used throughout the City’s ESL programs. These educational materials include a 36-page workbook, a low-level reader, a lesson plan, and translated magazines about City services. The program focuses on fostering community, enhancing service learning, and providing low-cost high quality resources to ELLs. In the coming program year, a second season of the series will be produced. In addition, the WANY program occasionally provides professional development workshops to ESL teachers and providers. It has created an extensive lesson plan that will add 150-200 hours of literacy and advanced communication practice. These classes will be available to ELLs in fall 2017 along with an interactive website and learning platform and a whole set of new videos and resources to complement language learning in the City.
