NYC VISTA-Youth Leadership Council Development (NYC Service)

The goal of the NYC Service Youth Leadership (NYC YLC) program is to engage 10% of NYC High School students annually in Youth Leadership Councils (30,000) by 2020, impacting urban issues through policy, practice, and/or advocacy service, as well as developing future leaders and creating a culture of youth voice in New York City. This is accomplished by creating and supporting a network of YLCs within City agencies, local government, schools and community-based organizations. Two NYC Youth Leadership Council Strategy and Development VISTA members will work to build capacity for the NYC Youth Leadership Council program, expanding systems and supports to more than double the number of YLCs across all five boroughs (from 200 to 500 Councils in 2017-2018) and engage thousands of youth in the City. The members will design the training scope, support tools, and youth resources to support the Councils as well as large scale program expansion. Specific focus this year will be given to the development of systems and content for an online resource portal for both youth and adults in the program. A distinct need in the 2017-2018 NYC YLC program is to create large scale systems to increase the number of YLCs, and leverage tools to support these new and existing YLCs to support a critical mass of high school youth with effective programming. VISTAs will assist NYC Service to better target outreach to those benefitting from the services offered (host sites/adult YLC facilitators/youth participants), expand communication to a robustly expanding number of participants, and create/further develop online platforms that allow these participants to access key information to improve youth leadership experiences.
