NYC VISTA-Youth Program Outreach (NYC Service)

The Youth Program Outreach & Communications VISTA member will build greater capacity to recruit youth and adults for both the NYC Youth Leadership Council program and NYC Youth Mentoring initiative. The member will research partnerships to develop comprehensive youth partner outreach databases, design promotional materials, and track partner involvement. In addition, the member will provide support to the NYC Mentoring Coalition to bring more partners to the table and leverage partners to grow numbers of mentors and mentees (youth) engaged. The two programs have distinct goals to increase the opportunities for high school youth across New York City: The goal of the NYC Service Youth Leadership Program (NYC YLC) is to engage 10% of NYC High School students annually in Youth Leadership Councils (30,000) by 2020, impacting urban issues through policy, practice, and/or advocacy service, as well as developing future leaders and creating a culture of youth voice in New York City. This is accomplished by creating and supporting a network of YLCs within City agencies, local government, schools and community-based organizations. The overarching goal of NYC Youth Mentoring Strategic Plan is to reach 40,000 High School students with mentoring experience annually by 2022, supporting the city's Equity and Excellence plan to achieve 80% high school graduation and 2/3 college ready rate by 2026. The vision is for mentoring to be available to and encouraged for every young person in New York City as a proven and positive youth development strategy, contributing to positive decision making, education achievements, successful career/college options and life pathways. A distinct need for both the 2017-2018 NYC Youth Leadership Councils and Youth Mentoring initiatives is to create systems to increase the number of YLC host sites and mentoring partners, and leverage innovative outreach tools to recruit new partners to support high school youth with effective programming.
