NYC VISTA Summer Associates-NYC Parks-GreenThumb
 
 
 
The Summer Associates project will directly impact NYC Parks-GreenThumb’s ability to engage and support New York City Housing Authority’s (NYCHA’s) volunteer resident gardeners by providing GreenThumb with the information and understanding necessary to understand and support the program. GreenThumb supports nearly 600 community gardens and 20,000 community gardeners throughout NYC. As part of a project to evaluate and scope potential support to the NYCHA resident gardening program, GreenThumb will be locating, organizing, and mapping approximately 600 resident gardens on NYCHA property to better understand garden locations within NYCHA developments. This will involve field work of visiting NYCHA developments, recording their location and characteristics (size, types of plants grown, type of materials being used) via handheld applications on a smart phone, organizing the data that is obtained in a databse/excel, and then potentially creating maps of the gardens in a Geographic Information System (GIS).

Member Duties : Summer Associates will create a comprehensive record of the number, location, and characteristics of all 600 resident gardens throughout approximately 200 New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) developments throughout NYC so that GreenThumb can understand what is needed to best support these residents. This will allow GreenThumb to identify how support may be best provided to NYCHA’s gardening program and gardeners based on garden location and density. Our expectation is that during the course of the Program, all resident gardens will be captured via GPS, and the data prepared within in an Excel document for eventual upload to NYC Parks’ in-house Geographic Information System (GIS) program, and shared with NYCHA for use in their planning.
